This paper explores gender discrimination, defined as the unequal treatment of women, as depicted in the home and educational settings in the novel The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare. The researcher employs a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the novel. Using Barthe’s and Sylvia Walby’s theory of six patriarchal structures, the analysis focuses specifically on household production, male violence, and cultural aspects to examine the representation of discrimination experienced by the main character. The findings reveal that Adunni’s home is neither a safe nor comfortable space; it is governed by strict rules and serves as a site of discrimination, particularly through instances of sexual harassment. This illustrates how the implementation of patriarchal structures in society perpetuates discrimination against women. Furthermore, education is portrayed as another arena of discrimination. Although education is typically viewed as a means for women to acquire knowledge, within the patriarchal system it is often regarded as useless for women.
Nabila Puri Cantika Pramudana Ihsan Copyright (c) 2026 cantika270102 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-06-20 2026-06-20 1 1 1 10 Designing a Bilingual E-Catalogue to Enhance Customer Accessibility for Moseul (A Premium Press-On Nails Company) https://jesscom.upnjatim.ac.id/index.php/jesscom/article/view/45
Moseul, a Premium Press-On Nails, is a company that is engaged in the fashion industry. They sell a variety of press-on nails designs and allow custom orders. They use social media and the marketplace to sell and showcase their products. However, they have no medium to showcase all of their product and supporting information in a structured way. Therefore, this research focuses on designing a bilingual e-catalogue for Moseul. The objective is to develop a bilingual e-catalogue utilized in both English and Indonesian. The researcher followed the ADDIE model, which includes Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data was collected through observations, interviews, documentations, and questionnaires. The final products were validated by both language and translation validators and design validators. Then, a questionnaire was distributed to local and global potential customers as part of field testing. The outcomes indicate an overall satisfaction rate of about 95%. The final evaluation confirmed that the bilingual e-catalogue is effectively useful as the primary reference medium for Moseul as well as enhancing customer accessibility and helping customers make informed purchasing decisions.
Aviana Vionisa Rahim Hilda Cahyani Copyright (c) 2026 Aviana Vionisa Rahim, Hilda Cahyani https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-06-30 2026-06-30 1 1 11 24 10.33005/jesscom.v1i1.45 Expanding Global Reach: Design and Implementation of a Bilingual Website for KIN Topeng Malangan MSME https://jesscom.upnjatim.ac.id/index.php/jesscom/article/view/49
KIN Topeng Malangan is an MSME in Malang that produces and sells Malangan mask souvenirs made of fiberglass, as well as other fiberglass souvenirs. This study employed a qualitative review design. The analysis shows that research based on 26 previous studies on the use of HelloTalk and similar Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) applications consistently demonstrates a strong positive impact on students’ speaking skills across various educational contexts. These studies indicate that such applications enhance key aspects of speaking, including fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and communicative competence, while also improving learners’ confidence, motivation, engagement, and participation. The interactive features of HelloTalk, particularly real-time communication with native speakers, provide authentic learning experiences that support meaningful language use and reduce speaking anxiety. In addition, the platform promotes learner autonomy by enabling flexible and continuous practice beyond the classroom. However, despite these benefits, several challenges remain, including limited vocabulary, difficulty in understanding different accents, technical issues, and inconsistent interaction with language partners. Furthermore, many existing studies rely on short-term and predominantly qualitative approaches, indicating the need for more comprehensive and longitudinal research. Overall, HelloTalk can be considered an effective and innovative MALL tool for improving speaking skills in EFL contexts. Nevertheless, its optimal implementation requires appropriate pedagogical support and integration into structured learning environments to maximize its potential and address existing limitations.
Tira Nur Fitria Copyright (c) 2026 Tira Nur Fitria https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-07-05 2026-07-05 1 1 40 54 10.33005/jesscom.v1i1.53 ABBREVIATION IN THE NAMING OF PUBLIC SPACE https://jesscom.upnjatim.ac.id/index.php/jesscom/article/view/61
Writing names in public spaces is not always written in full. Some of them had written by abbreviation. This is because of the limited land owned by the owners of public space. This study aims to describe the phenomenon of language abbreviation based on the results of classification. Data obtained through Google Maps imagery. Data restrictions were made, namely naming public spaces in central Surabaya. The data is grouped with the characteristics of abbreviation and then classified according to their shape. Then the data were analyzed using the naming and abbreviation theory. The results obtained are in the form of a classification of abbreviation writing techniques in naming public spaces, including: (i) abbreviations, (ii) acronyms, (iii) beheading, and (iv) a combination of acronyms and abbreviations. These abbreviations form a few one to seven words. Despite the abbreviation, some naming still consists of more than five words. The phenomenon of abbreviation forms a pattern which is subsequently agreed upon by the community. In fact, some of the abbreviations are unknown.
Moulidvi Rizki Permita Ambaristi Hersita Milanguni Adinda Prasty Ascalonicawati Hanum Lintang Siwi Suwignyo Copyright (c) 2026 Moulidvi Rizki Permita, Ambaristi Hersita Milanguni, Adinda Prasty Ascalonicawati, Hanum Lintang Siwi Suwignyo https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2026-07-05 2026-07-05 1 1 55 67 10.33005/jesscom.v1i1.61
