This study explores the use of HelloTalk as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tool in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, with a particular focus on its impact on students’ English speaking skills. This study employed a qualitative review design. The analysis shows that research based on 26 previous studies on the use of HelloTalk and similar Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) applications consistently demonstrates a strong positive impact on students’ speaking skills across various educational contexts. These studies indicate that such applications enhance key aspects of speaking, including fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and communicative competence, while also improving learners’ confidence, motivation, engagement, and participation. The interactive features of HelloTalk, particularly real-time communication with native speakers, provide authentic learning experiences that support meaningful language use and reduce speaking anxiety. In addition, the platform promotes learner autonomy by enabling flexible and continuous practice beyond the classroom. However, despite these benefits, several challenges remain, including limited vocabulary, difficulty in understanding different accents, technical issues, and inconsistent interaction with language partners. Furthermore, many existing studies rely on short-term and predominantly qualitative approaches, indicating the need for more comprehensive and longitudinal research. Overall, HelloTalk can be considered an effective and innovative MALL tool for improving speaking skills in EFL contexts. Nevertheless, its optimal implementation requires appropriate pedagogical support and integration into structured learning environments to maximize its potential and address existing limitations.References
